"Dancing" Dolly

Parton_dollyThat sweet, unmistakable voice on the phone could only be Dolly Parton's. She was answering my call about her upcoming Sept. 26 appearance on "Dancing With The Stars." "Yes, I'm very excited about being on 'Dancing With The Stars,'" Dolly enthused, as only she can. "But I will NOT be dancing," she insisted. "But there will be dancing (by the contestants) when I am singing 'Nine To Five.'" She will also perform her new single, "Better Get To Livin',"  from her upcoming album "Backwoods Barbie," to be released early next year. She has written the songs for the planned 2009 Broadway musical of her "Nine To Five" film/TV series. No, Dolly will not be on stage. "I'm too old to play a secretary,"  says the 61 year-old singer. At the play's readings in June, Megan Hilty played Dolly's role, Stephanie J. Block tackled Jane Fonda's character, and Allison Janney stepped in for Lili Tomlin. Showtime president Robert Greenblatt is producing the musical, which Joe Mantello will direct. Pat Resnick wrote the book.
