8 One Piece Remains for Acad Museum

While excitement is running high at the Academy on its upcoming museum, one piece of land has yet to be acquired. It was announced today that the French architectural firm, Atelier  Christian de  Portzamparc, has won the contract to design the Acad's museum on nearly-eight acres in the heart of Hollywood. But one remaining tract is yet to be acquired. The negotiations have long been in progress and I have inquired regularly about it with Academy president Sid Ganis, Academy past-president and longtime museum planner Bob Rehme and exec director Bruce Davis. All are confident the land will be acquired.

Ganis winged to London to participate in the Acad-British Film Institute tribute to Stanley Kubrick, Friday night. Ganis, not only represents the Academy and Kubrick's contributions, he also worked with him on "Dr. Strangelove" in 1964. At the time, Ganis was a member of Columbia's publicity department. "He (Kubrick) had radical ideas on how to publicize the movie," Ganis recalls.  It was Kubrick's idea to make Slim Pickens the star in publicity appearances for "Dr. Strangelove" -- particularly in television interviews. Ganis recalls, "It worked!"
