"Hillary Man" Jack -- But...
Jack Nicholson watched Wednesday night's debate between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. It is well known that the Oscar-winning actor is an ardent Hillary supporter so when he told me he thought she did "very well," I wasn't surprised. But the ultra-realistic and well-informed Nicholson assured me, "No one's gonna change his mind from a debate." I had called Jack to let him know he's featured in the May issue of Men's Vogue in which Clay Risen reported a poll in which men 50 and over supported Hillary over Obama by 48 to 27 where as men under 50 support Obama 44 to 35. Jack will be 71 on April 22 and he plans on celebrating with his children. I didn't ask him who they were supporting.
Jack is heading to Japan to make promotional appearances for "The Bucket List." He loves the film and it has been getting terrific international response. When asked if that means he's looking for another comedy, he laughingly said, "I can't seem to be doing anything -- without adding some comedy." Thus, he doesn't know if he'll return to the genre for his next film. "But I don't seem to have any trouble finding ideas." We segued from movies to a sober talk about politics, war and the current state of our country and he said, "We got what we deserved -- that's the way this country works. But," the well-traveled Nicholson reminded, "the world still looks to us as the last great hope for freedom."
